After his death, an obituary in the Monthly Magazine stated that Erasmus told a friend “let us not hear anything about hell.” Erasmus said that religious people are credulous dupes and that religious credulity can be cured by “knowledge of the laws of nature.” The poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson coined that phrase nine years before On the Origin of Species appeared, and was referring to earlier ideas about evolution. Perhaps Darwin was not quite as revolutionary as he’s made out to be!
